Did you know that exercise can help your brain recover from head injuries? Try virtual-reality gaming while you work out!

This study will test a combined exercise and virtual-reality working memory retraining program for Veterans with alcohol use disorder and histories of mild traumatic brain injury.

Am I eligible for this study?
We are looking for Veterans, between the ages of 18 and 65, who (1) drink alcohol in large amounts AND (2) have experienced a head injury.

What will I do if I participate in this study?

  • Complete psychiatric and neurocognitive assessments to determine if you are eligible and if it is safe for you to participate. The psychiatric and neurocognitive batteries will be repeated twice during the active 8-week phase.
  • Complete 24 sessions of physical exercise on a stationary bicycle and/or virtual-reality training over 8 weeks at the San Francisco VA Health Care System.
  • Attend a follow-up visit 1 month following your last training session.

Do you offer a monetary incentive?
Yes! If you attend all visits, you will be compensated up to $630.
