Substance use disorders are indicated when the recurrent use of alcohol and/or drugs causes significant impairment such as health problems, disability and failure to meet major responsibilities at work, school or home.
The severity of the disorder may be mild, moderate or severe depending on how many diagnostic criteria are met by an individual, according to the DSM-5.
